Case Study: Custom ADU Modeling After Backyard Landslide
Reimagining a Backyard After the Storm with BIM Modeling
After a mudslide hit Layton, Utah in 2023, a homeowner found their backyard transformed. A major landslide had carved out a gulch behind the house, leaving behind a steep drop and an unexpected new view. Instead of seeing a problem, they saw potential and reached out to us with an idea.
They wanted to explore building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) with a home gym and an observatory deck. Something modern. Something bold. Something that could turn the damaged hillside into a showpiece.
From Drone Data to Design in Days
We got to work quickly, pulling together LiDAR drone data from a neighbor’s flight right after the storm and photogrammetry from photos taken a few weeks later. By stitching those together into high-resolution point clouds, we modeled the evolving site terrain in Revit.
We shared everything with the homeowner through Speckle’s 3D viewer, letting them interact with the site model directly in their browser. No software required. They could explore the slope, see how close structures were to existing property lines, and get a feel for where things might go.
Fast Iterations. Real Feedback. No Guesswork.
With the terrain model dialed in, we began testing out concepts. First came the idea of a container-based ADU. Then a switch to a more traditional prefab kit that would be easier to assemble. Each version was modeled and shared back with the client quickly, helping them visualize options in context and get a sense of how each layout might fly with the city.
We also created a full site plan for city submission, showing setbacks, topography, and placement relative to existing structures. The client was able to get early feedback from the city based on actual design data rather than vague sketches, saving time and frustration.
